The comfort of enjoying daily soup
in a carefully crafted bowl.

When I hear "lacquered bowl," the first thing that comes to mind is Ozoni soup for New Year's. A deep, lustrous black or vermilion bowl with an elegant lid, a special item for a festive day. Perhaps because of that impression, I had always considered lacquerware to be something far removed from everyday life.
This soup bowl from Rokurosha helped reset that preconception. There are various techniques for lacquerware, but this bowl is made using the "fuki-urushi" (wipe-lacquer) technique, where lacquer is repeatedly rubbed into the wooden bowl. It has a light feel, can be washed with dish soap, and is easy to maintain, making it suitable for daily use. I find it incredibly comforting to enjoy my daily soup in such a beautiful, unpretentious bowl.

The beauty of the wood grain,
and the translucent luster of lacquer.

Rokurosha, who operates a workshop in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, creates products while inheriting the traditional techniques of a marumono-kijishi (turner). A kijishi is a craftsman who uses a lathe to carve wood and create products such as bowls and trays. On Rokurosha's website, you can watch a short video of their production process, and it's impressive to see how the wood is carved and quickly takes shape.
The core wood is Mizume-zakura, a natural wood characterized by its fine and elegant grain. The lacquer is finished with a light sheen, allowing the subtle expression of the wood grain to emerge. At kikkake, we offer two types: a clear amber raw lacquer (ki-urushi) finish and a translucent black lacquer finish. We hope you will enjoy how the luster of the lacquer deepens with each use.

Its linear shape creates a sophisticated impression,
stable and easy to hold.

This soup bowl has a distinctive shape with a high foot and a sleek, linear body. This balance gives it a refined and dignified presence. Therefore, while it naturally blends in with a classic Japanese set meal, it also firmly supports the dish in situations where soup is the star, such as miso soup with many ingredients, kasu-jiru, or oshiruko.
Furthermore, it is highly functional; its tall, flared foot provides stability and makes it easy to hold. It also has ample capacity, so I believe it is a bowl that allows you to fully and leisurely enjoy your soup.
